A unique place in the world with many little jewels all around. The territory overlooked by the Aetna offers several surprises to those ones who land here. Not just the majestic volcano and its homonymous Park are worth going on interesting excursions but also the various localities enclosed in this protected area. Ragalna, peculiar little village settled - 830 metres on the sea level - on the south-western side of the Aetna, is exemplar in this sense. Plunged into a scenery outlined by fruit orchards, olive groves and vineyards the village of Ragalna guards prestigious historical monuments such as the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo (Our Lady of Carmel's Church - XIX century) whom Saint Patroness is dedicated the annual feast occurring at the end of September; the Chiesa di Santa Barbara (Saint Barbara's Church); the Chiesa di Don Bosco (Father Bosco's Church) and the Chiesa della Madonna delle Nevi (Our Lady of the Snows' Church). Not far away from Ragalna extends the town of Paternò…of which Ragalna itself was a hamlet without its own municipality until 1985, before becoming an autonomous common in deed. In the small town of Paternò - after taking a walk along the ancient boulevard named "Via Vittorio Emanuele" which is rich in patrician mansions and considered as the "outdoor parlour" of the town - some historical buildings rising on the higher part of the locality (called the Historical Hill) are really worth paying a visit. Among these monuments particularly distinguishing are: the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church - 1342) with its monumental flight of steps contemporaneously giving access to the building and connecting it to the little village down below; the architectonic complex of San Francesco alla Collina (Saint Charles on the Hill - 1346) with its gothic style marked church and the Castello Normanno (Norman Castle - 1072). At the basement of the hill - where since the XIV century onwards developed the "low part of the town" - the architectonic complex of the ex-monastery of the Santissima Annunziata (Our Most Holy Lady of the Annunciation - XVII century) and the churches of Santa Barbara and Santa Caterina d'Alessandria stand out instead.
A two hearts' nest located at the slopes of the Aetna. In the shadow of "the giant of fire" - the highest active volcano of Europe (3,440 metres) - you run into Vigna Mascalisi, delicious little house settled in the vicinity of Ragalna, peculiar little village situated inside of the Park of the Aetna - the first protected area ever founded in Sicily - which was instituted in 1987. The dwelling is placed inside of an estate belonging to a biological farm endowed with a little restaurant and a small bed & breakfast (3 rooms) proposing the tasting of typical products and direct sale of extra virgin olive-oil, Doc wines, vegetables, fruits and other delicacies which are the results of a production of their own. The house has been thoroughly covered with lava stones blocks and it is harmoniously inserted inside the mild hilly landscape of the Aetna, pretty outlined by vineyards, olive-trees, oaks and dried low walls. And right from nature derive the materials used to create the bio-architecture of Vigna Mascalisi: the chestnut-wood of the Aetna shows up as in the beams of the roof as well in the beams of the doors and of the windows; the reeds of the river Simeto catch the eye in the ceilings while the terracotta and the Sicilian ceramics expand on the pavements and on the walls. Manufactured articles contributing to create a pleasing sensation of comfort in between of functional and well-maintained furnishings. The secluded living-dining room with sofa bed pleasantly merges into the contiguous kitchen corner where the attention gets caught by the shelf made out of lava stone of the Aetna…the same stone used to make the shelf of the lavabo in the bathroom - this last consisting of ante-bathroom and shower - while the natural dyes of the double room embellish this space of the lodging with a touch of sober elegance. On the outside, instead, the wide terrace and the tiny private garden invite you to enjoy your relax and idleness in such a suggestive rural scenery alternating vineyards and olive groves.
